How to read the diagrams

A factor acting to suppress that reaction

A factor acting to promote that reaction

Line and direction

T-bar, crossbar at the target

Suppresses the target

Promotes the target

The T-bar is one shape; which side the crossbar sits on is what changes the direction. Suppressing factors are written in purple and promoting factors in orange, so the colour of the text tells you the same thing.

What purple and orange indicate is not a property of the term itself but its direction with respect to that reaction. The same term can appear in the opposite colour elsewhere.
